On Prisma magazine n. 2/2018, now available at the newsstands, the article “Gli indagatori di disastri – Macerie, lamiere contorte resti bruciati… Come fanno i periti a ricostruire cause e dinamiche di una sciagura? La delicata scienza dell’ingegneria forense” by Francesca Gatti is available.
Luca Fiorentini, partner in MFCforensic and executive director in TECSA, was interviewed by the author as a teacher at the first forensic engineering master at the Polytechnique University of Turin (Master di Ingegneria Forense del Politecnico di Torino).
The article, taking the moves from the recent collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa (MFCforensic’s technicians are involved in its investigation), intends to show some of the salient aspects of the hard role of the forensic engineer: from evidence collection to failure analysis, from the finite elements simulations to the experience in the ThyssenKrupp fire of 2007 at Turin.
In conclusion, the article highlights the need for the technical consultant to stop not at the obvious, the immediate and the visible, but to find, examine and demonstrate also the latent causes, that can be associated to responsibilities that are not easily identifiable.
